And Can It Be That I Should Gain - Hymn For Nov 21

Charles Wesley was another prolific hymnwriter, and to me, this one has got to be his best hymn. And Can It Be That I Should Gain (Lyrics: Charles Wesley; Music: Thomas Campbell) 1) And can it be that I should gain An interest in the Saviour’s blood? Died He for me, who caused His pain? For me, who Him to death pursued? Amazing love! How can it be, That Thou, my God, shouldst die for me? Chorus: Amazing love! How can it be, That Thou, my God, shouldst die for me? 2) ’Tis mystery all: th’Immortal dies: Who can explore His strange design? In vain the firstborn seraph tries To sound the depths of love divine. ’Tis mercy all! Let earth adore, Let angel minds inquire no more. 3) He left His Father’s throne above So free, so infinite His grace; Emptied Himself of all but love, And bled for Adam’s helpless race; ’Tis mercy all, immense and free, For O my God, it found out me! 4) Long my imprisoned spirit lay, Fast bound in sin and nature’s night; Thine eye diffused a quickening ray, I wo...

The Psalms Of David By Isaac Watts And Other Scriptures In Verse - Hymns For Nov 14

Last week I sent out a link to The Psalms Of David In Metre by the Church Of Scotland. Today I want to send out another old hymnal from the Psalms put together by Isaac Watts. The Psalms Of David In Metre By Isaac Watts The following selections are taken from his collection of Psalms in Metre. You should definitely recognize these popular hymns. While the rest of his Psalms in Metre may not be as popular, they are very much worth reading and perhaps even singing. Click on the titles if you want to go to that specific section. Psalm 90 - Part One. Verses 1-5. Man frail, and God eternal. 1 Our God, our help in ages past, Our hope for years to come, Our shelter from the stormy blast, And our eternal home. 2 Under the shadow of thy throne Thy saints have dwelt secure; Sufficient is thine arm alone, And our defence is sure. 3 Before the hills in order stood, Or earth receiv'd her frame, From everlasting thou art God, To endless years the same. 4 Thy word commands our flesh to dust, ...

Love Broke Through - Song For Oct 5

We all face the storms of life - sometimes are battered pretty fiercely. It is hard enough when it a personal storm we are going through, but what happens when you have loved ones that are in situations beyond your control? Then it is time to seek the Lord in prayer until He answers, and we see His love break through our storms. Spurgeon once said, "Prayer moves the arm that moves the world." Love Broke Through I left my shelter, wandered out into harm; My faith grew so weak in the path of the storm. A trial of my choosing; no one else to blame; But His love broke through when I called on His name. Chorus: Love broke through the clouds, Love scattered the rain; God’s love brought healing in the midst of my pain. When the wind and the waves were all I could view, Jesus calmed the storm, and His love broke through. The wind rose so sudden, the thunder now roared; I was all but sinking; my faith came unmoored. A trial to test me – how could I survive? Love broke through and show...

God Holds Us Up In His Arms - Devotional For Oct 1

The following two sections are taken from a longer study called   The Hand And Arm Of God : 6) In Comfort And Blessing. This is a verse that has spoken to my heart countless times: Isaiah 40:11  He shall feed his flock like a shepherd: he shall gather the lambs with his arm, and carry them in his bosom, and shall gently lead those that are with young. Mark 10:13-16  And they brought young children to him, that he should touch them: and his disciples rebuked those that brought them. But when Jesus saw it, he was much displeased, and said unto them, Suffer the little children to come unto me, and forbid them not: for of such is the kingdom of God. Verily I say unto you, Whosoever shall not receive the kingdom of God as a little child, he shall not enter therein.  And he took them up in his arms, put his hands upon them, and blessed them .  (See also Mark 9:36.) Isaiah 46:4  And even to your old age I am he; and even to hoar hairs will I carry you: I ha...
